Matthew 6:28-30

  • “Why take thought about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: They neither work, nor do they spin. Yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is here and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”
Matthew 6:28-30, Modern English Version (MEV)

Let there be no mistake, we like our clothes. We have clothes for different occasions and times of day. For many it has become an obsession requiring large rooms, even warehouses, to store the clothes we may only wear once, if ever. And yet, as Jesus so simply tells us, no matter how fancy our clothes, no matter how unique, no matter how expensive, they cannot compare with the beauty of even the simplest flower that grows wild in nature. Our sense of beauty has become so unbalanced that we give honor and glory to the false fronts we dress ourselves in, rather than simple, modest, and functional dress which is all we need. We keep telling ourselves that it isn’t what’s on the outside that counts, even as we go to greater lengths to beautify the outside. We don’t even listen to ourselves.
