When you feel older than dirt...

  • I was just playing some mp3s, and I've loved this concert since I got it...The Police - Certifiable.  I especially liked "Voices in My Head/When the World is Running Down" medley, and loved what lyrics I managed to snag (Sting went kind of fast).  I just decided (after over half a year) to look up the full lyrics.  And it actually cracked me up and made me smile.  Cos it's true...all of it.  Settling into a routine, not gettig out much, not necessarily doing much new, being set in one's ways and getting older and watching everything die around you...and -STILL- carrying on as best you can, enjoying what you have left, even as half of it breaks down, and you feel more and more isolated.  He was really young when he wrote this, well before he went solo, so I'd consider it extremely precocious and prescient of him.  Stewart Copeland, whom I really like, can knock Sting's (allegedly) shallow take on psychology all he likes, but there are some real gems of observations in Sting's work.

Gotta remember this one for the days when I feel 40 going on 192.

"When the World Is Running Down"

    Turn on my V.C.R.
Same one I've had for years
    James Brown on the T. A. M. I. show
Same tape I've had for years
I sit in my old car
Same one I've had for years
    Old battery's running down
It ran for years and years

    Turn on the radio
    The static hurts my ears
Tell me where would I go
I ain't been out in years
    Turn on the stereo
It's played for years and years
    An Otis Redding song
    It's all I own

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around

    Plug in my M.C.I
    To exercise my brain
    Make records on my own
Can't go out in the rain
    Pick up the telephone
    I've listened here for years
No one to talk to me
    I've listened here for years

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around

    When I feel lonely here
Don't waste my time with tears
    I run 'Deep Throat' again
It ran for years and years
Don't like the food I eat
    The cans are running out
Same food for years and years
I hate the food I eat

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around
