Golden Opportunity

  • I've seen far too many people throw away their chance for spiritual/intellectual growth. They don't come every day, and they come less and less often as we age.

If you grow up with a list of X (pick your own number for X) things that your church teaches you are TRUTH, but upon reaching adulthood you learn from personal experience that ONE of them - ANY one of them - is NOT TRUTH, you have an opportunity.

At that moment, your own experiences trump your childhood indoctrination on THAT ONE ISSUE. Your own experience that this doctrine is false will allow you the normally forbidden chance to re-examine and reject the ONE false doctrine you have actually examined for yourself. That can be an eye opener, but it is NOT your only opportunity at that moment.

Religious doctrines generally don't work like legal contracts. Contracts often contain a provision which states that "if one clause is found to be unenforceable, the rest of the contract is still valid". With a religion, you are generally told that EVERY clause is equally valid and equally CORRECT. You JUSt saw that ONE of them was WRONG. You KNOW that in your heart, so if you allow yourself the freedom of THOUGHT, you can also consider whether the REST of the doctrines are equally flawed.
Just for a moment, while assimilating the changes in your life that come from discovering ONE falsehood in your beliefs, you have a chance to see if there is falsehood in any (all?) of the others... but if you are like most people you are subject to skipping that further analysis as you focus on your new understanding of just that ONE doctrine.
Don't let this chance pass you by. You have a chance, while your brain is rewiring itself, to recognize that just because you have not personally experienced the falsehood of the remaining (X-1) doctrines, that doesn't make them TRUE any more than the ONE you know to be false.
But your chance to explore the rest of it is limited, because the doctrines that don't affect YOU personally, the ones for which you have no PERSONAL proof of error, are planted DEEPLY in your mind. If not rooted out when your mind is OPEN to doing so, you'll likely be saddled for the remainder of your life with the REST of the still-unexamined doctrines, many (ALL?) of which are no more true than the one you HAVE recognized as a lie.

Mystic Angel This was an awsome post, so very true. I think we get caught up in the seeds that were planted without questioning them for fear of being wrong. With so many people believing it , it must be true, right? WRONG!! This is a good reminder to challenge these ...  more
