Out on a Limb

  • Many faces hath the tree, of life, of death, and family.
The leaves and limbs reach into space, as far as the human eye can see.
Its roots are deep, they pierce the earth, with strength beyond compare.
To reach the top, the lofty heights, is more than some can bare.

The tree is fabled for the snake, the apple offered Eve.
The story told how Adam wanted so much to believe.
Life would last forever, if he would take a bite.
His fate was sealed with apple pie, to Satans pure delight.

The noble tree has also served, to keep us all afloat.
For Noah used a score of trees while building his great boat.
The rains that fell and drowned the land so many years ago.
Wiped out the things that couldn't swim; but trees, they still did grow.

We count our generations past on limbs of trees we draw.
Aunts and uncles, cousins too, by blood or by the law.
The good, the bad, and the ugly ; a limb for me and for you.
The family tree connects us all like the strongest super glue

For some, the tree has been the end, of happiness and hope.
A life of crime has canceled life, from the end of the hangmans rope.
The tree has offered comfort from the burning heat of day.
Its shade protecting travelers, while traveling on their way.

Today is the day to celebrate the noble, regal, tree so tall.
Appreciate the things it gives to creatures great or small.
Protect them, plant them, never waste them, it seems so plain to see.
That there truly is nothing lovelier than a freshly planted tree.~Jay Olson
