Asatru "borrowing" from other religions

  • I've seen this a number of times, mostly with those coming from other religions and trying to take with them parts of their old faith and bring it into their new faith.

Let's take an example, there are some Asatru who will "Create a circle" and call on a whole horde of Gods and beings during a single simple ritual with little purpose.

    And here's why that's wrong:

First off: Self-reliance, don't ask others, no matter if it's a man or a god, for assistance with everything, you should do what you can to take care of yourself, this includes working with magic.

It's not wrong to ask the gods for things, but remember that our gods are more like family than they are supreme beings off in the distance.

Also remember that it's only a coward who asks everyone else for protection without even trying to do something about it themselves, and why should any being, god or man, honor the request of a coward?

In general it's a more important show of honor to invite them in to your feast, prepare a plate of food and a cup of drink for them, involve them in things, give them gifts as one would a friend, than it is to chant a chant or light some incense.

Back on the topic of "borrowing", there is no need to borrow, we have plenty of rituals and ways of our own that cover the big life situations such as birth, death, weddings, landtakings, and so on, and if you're not sure of how to perform a certain ritual, simply contact another Gothi and they'll help you with it.

But please, stop this silly "borrowing", there's no need for it, and it makes you look like you're trying to change your new religion into your old religion.

And for those who aren't coming from another religion I'd like to say this: Stop. Think. Listen. Do you really feel the need to come up with a new way to do things?

When was the last time you did a Sitting Out? Been a while, hm? Go ahead, do it, clear your head, read the books, and share a glas of mead with the gods, you'll find your way again.

Joshua Browning Do you consider the Hammer Rite to be borrowed? If so how would you hallow a place that you will use for ritual for the first time?

Gothi Marcus Fernstrom The Hammer Rite is certainly borrowed, it exists in multiple version and they all pretty much copy from the Wiccans. Explaining how to perform a hollowing will take more space than just a few lines in these comments, at least if I am to do it properly.
