Racism in Asatru - Why it's silly

  • As the title of this post says, this is going to be about racism in Asatru.

It's a problem, as there are a number of people and a few groups out there who try to bend Asatru and our sacred lore to support their silly racism and separatism politics.

I'm going to refute it with a single quote from the Eddas:

"One day, as the sons of Bor were walking along the sea-beach they found two stems of wood, out of which they shaped a man and a woman. The first (Odin) infused into them life and spirit; the second (Vili) endowed them with reason and the power of motion; the third (Ve) gave them speech and features, hearing and vision. The man they called Ask, and the woman, Embla. From these two descend the whole human race whose assigned dwelling was within Midgard."

We're ALL descendant of the first two humans, Ask and Embla, which makes racism and separatism in the name of Asatru a very silly thing to promote.

There are many races mentioned in our lore, but there is only one race of humans, and that is humans.

Some groups like the Asatru Folk Assembly (AFA) have their own version of the Nine Noble Virtues which includes "Ancestry is better than universalism". I personally look at this statement like this: Family comes first, and by family I mean your blood-family, your parents, grandparents, your siblings, etc. And then the rest of the world.

This doesn't mean that people outside of your family is any less valued that the peopl in your family.

I also want to touch on the term "Folk" that many Asatru use to refer to other Asatru, as a Swedish Asatru I find this term silly in more ways than one, first off it helps build separatism by the "you and us" mentality, "folk" and people who are not folk.

Second, just because someone is Asatru doesn't mean they're any better than anyone else.

Remember that we should judge a person by their actions and their words, not by their thoughts!

Sojourner Robert Hess I've never understood racism myself, biologically speaking there is only one sentient and sapient "race" on this planet, that being the Human Race, all other difference is merely adaptation to environment and culture.

Sojourner Robert Hess I also disagree with eugenics in any form, not only is it inhumane it is short sighted. What we may view as a genetic weakness in one generation may be a strength in the next. This may seem slightly off topic but it relates from at least a historical standpoint.

Joshua Browning Allow me to help you Marcus. If you will refer back to the Lay of Rig. Where Rig (debated to be either Odin or Heimdallr) impregnated Great Grandmother, Grandmother, and Mother. From which sprang the 3 races of man Thrall (negroid), Karl (mongoloid), and ...  more

Gothi Marcus Fernstrom How did you come to the conclusion that those three races are negroid, mongoloid and caucasoid? It's just another bastardization from neo-nazis to try and claim to be Asatru.
