A LITTLE MYSTICAL FUN

  • I submit to you my most recent entry for my monthly journaling group. The assignment was to write about a side of yourself that you haven't tapped into lately. I call it:

A MESSAGE FROM MY INNER MYSTIC

To break the spell of my recent overzealousness, an almost forgotten Jungian inner-friend mentally came to me, all Merlin-like, and he tapped me on the head with his staff.

“Huh! You’re no fun anymore – all rational and no soul! What got up your craw?”

    Excuse me?

“Yeah, you! Who do you think I was speaking with?”

Okay, I’m game… What do you want?

“What happened to the person who believed in the more spiritual and beautiful side of life?!”

What do you mean, what happened? I still believe…

“All this cold rational stuff… Have you lost faith?”

    No.

“Well, then why did you turn away? You know that logic and reason can be flawed, right?”

Yes, I’m aware of that – painfully aware.

“Good – then how do you feel about me, your Inner Mystic? I haven’t seen you in the Labyrinth for quite a while now.”

    I’ve missed you. I’ve just been…busy.

“Busy-schmizzy… Bupkis! You have a funny way of showing you’ve missed me, pal.”

Okay, olkay – so what do you propose I do about it?

“You need dragons! You need faeries! You need ghosts and goblins! Wake up (or go back to sleep and dream) and notice the spirits around you!”

Wait…I’m not so sure about that. Are you sure that’s wise?

“Oh, come on, what are you afraid of? What happened to the child who drew copious pictures of dragons and elves in those massive art books and wrote short stories – funny stories, good stories?”

    She grew up.

“Yeah, and now she’s no fun. I dare you to believe again, to let go of that INTJ/Deist cold heart. You had whole parts of fantasy books underlined and memorized, remember?”

    That’s true, I did.

“You haven’t even been writing your Traveler stories, the ones you were given in dreams.”

    (Sigh) That’s true.

“So lighten up and admit that your spiritual side has a mystical side too – the side that would love to talk to the Greek god Apollo about ‘Know Thyself’ and ‘In all things Moderation’; the side that could have easily come from the Oracle of Delphi; the side that has walked in dreams in mystic forests and encountered the Goblyn King. These were placed in your head for a reason – to remind you of your spirit and to teach you. Or have you forgotten?”

I guess I did forget – but I’m beginning to remember, Inner Mystic.

“Excellent! Welcome back to the Labyrinth! I’ll see you in dreams; be sure to write about me. Don’t make me nag you further!”
