An Exercise in Faith

  • Here I am, a product of the late 20th century living in the 21st century, a world of resources before me and thousands upon thousands of different belief systems that may or may not be right for me. I'm pretty solid just now in what I believe but I decided, for the sake of argument and to get rid of some writers block, to figure out what I actually 'know' about this wonderful being we call by so many names, God being just one of them. In order to focus my train of thought I went back to my very beginning.

Imagine, if you will, that you just woke up tomorrow and all you have to tell you about yourself and the world you live in are a few random words and what you see around you. Here is what I came up with.

First, I woke up and everything around me (trees, cat, grass, air, other people) was there. I did not create these things and it got here somehow!

Second, this place we know as our world has various natural laws and cycles that seem to govern everything; nothing is as random as it seems, thus showing that the Creator who made this is an intelligent Creator.

Third, It just naturally feels better to love others than it does to hurt them. As humans we (most of us)have this thing about avoiding pain; it's part of our survival instinct.

Fourth, we as humans have this wonderful frontal lobe that increases our logic and reason capacity, amongst other functions. It makes up for the fact that we are fairly vulnerable and lacking protective claws like most creatures.

Fifth, I've noticed from working in groups that we seem to do better if there is a balance of discipline and freedom brought about by a common code of morals and ethics.

Sixth, the same thing happens when this body dies. Whatever it is that animates it (which I know to be the soul and/or spirit, depending on belief and terminology) leaves and the body returns to dust.

Seven, our very design is incredibly detailed and we still don't know how some of it functions.

*** Anyway, I went on and on like this for about four pages. I won't do it here as it makes for rather dry reading - but it was enough for me to truly and more deeply appreciate our Mighty Creator. It strips away religion and there you are, just you alone with God in this world with your eyes wide open. It's a beautiful experience and I highly recommend it.

    Enough Rambling!

    Have a Blessed Weekend!

    Shabbat Shalom, Brothers and Sisters!
