Coping with Grief this Holiday Season

  • When something like yesterday's tragedy happens, it reminds us of love and our first instinct is to hug our loved ones tightly to our chest. Then the fears and heavy heart hits. How do you navigate your life when it feels like the world has gone crazy around you? How do we bring joy, love and peace to this holiday season? How can we enjoy a time of happiness, when so much sadness and grief surrounds us?

Take a "time out" for yourself this weekend and make a list for yourself that clarifies and prioritizes what makes a holiday special for you.

Are there holiday rituals that bring you peace?

Include foods that trigger positive memories. That way you can say "yes" to those foods and it will be easier to bypass others. Small amounts eaten with great pleasure is very satisfying.

What are the spaces and places that are so beautiful this season that they bring tears to your eyes? Make sure you visit them.

Visit and appreciate the people who are meaningful to you and add love to your life.

Prioritize you! Now is the time to do the things that keep you sane, healthy and centered. Yoga, deep breathing, walks in nature, being utterly present with the perfect cup of tea. When there appears to be too much to do we think we can skimp on ourselves and yet that is when it is critical to do these things so that we can navigate life with grace.

Walk gently, breathe deeply, look for beauty, notice and appreciate what is right in your world, find reasons to smile, and share your love generously as you move through the holidays. Love and Peace.
