  • Hello Brothers and Sisters,

This week has certainly been a test for me. While I normally have some encouraging words, or spiritual advice, today I am just rambling on about what I enjoy most.... Computers. I realize that the readers of this article may range from extremely experienced users to first timers, so I will try to keep this an easy read for everyone. Working in IT, I often need to pioneer "bleeding-edge" technologies, operating systems and programs and evaluate them for use in our organization. In the last few weeks I've stumbled across some excellent programs that I wanted to share with our community here. Without further ado, here is my list of "Must-try" softwares for the technologically inclined among us:

1.) Linux Mint (MATE) 17 "Petra" - It isn't quite perfect yet, and requires a fairly confident linux user to mold into a stable operating system. However it has progressed by leaps and bounds, and is on the verge of being able to do nearly everything my Windows 7 + 8 systems are capable of. (Video games being the major exception) It is an excellent FREE alternative to purchasing a different OS like Windows.

2.) Plex Media Server- An excellent tool for users of all skill levels. Plex is a free tool to allow you to share content on your computer with anyone you choose. I use this to upload family photos and share the library with my mother. Without having to do anything other than put my pictures in their correct folders, my Mother can now browse them any time she chooses. Plex.tv is the website for this program. The Premium services are not required to share files.

3.) Avira Anti Virus- For the Intermediate to Advanced user. Avira may not be new, but it is surprisingly still unheard of in some IT circles. Avira can be downloaded, burned to a cd or put on a bootable flashdrive, and will boot your computer into a Ubuntu-Based pre runtime environment that has tons of functions, including the ability to scan and repair WINDOWS installations. That's right! If your PC is bricked to the point you can't even get windows to boot, TRY THIS FIRST! A must have for any PC technician, this program has saved me hundreds of manhours.

Have a blessed day Brothers and Sisters. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
