The Weekend

  • The Weekend.

The day started with an early morning in Florida with flight to Michigan for a three hour drive home. It was just a quick stop at home to grab the pack and boys, meet some friends and off we went. A nice evening stroll through the woods to a hill over a serine clay lake.  The stop for the night, what a great night the stars above shining bright.  With the sound of the cricket I called it a night.

The morning I rose to a woodpecker knocking away at the tree above. Morning coffee without having to get out of my sleeping bag. The quiet until others started to wake. Cleaned up and geared up ready to hike the day away.  Today was a beautiful hike through the forest the trees swaying back and forth with the wind. The left over leaves from the fall before dancing about on the ground. Squirrels playing tag in up and down the trees.  A grouse takes flight with the sound of a helicopter. Through the generations old pines you get a glimpse of one of the many lakes near the trail.  By 11 in the morning we reach our destination for the day.  A nice rustic state campground along a pristine Northern Michigan lake.  The sky clear as can be, I watch all set up their tents or hammocks and tarps. I wait and go down and sit by the lake, the wind dancing across the surface of the water choosing its path there and then over there. The ripples reflect the sun and it looks like a thousand suns on the waves. Birds and crickets sing their own songs of summer is coming.

As the day comes to an end and the sun starts to fall towards the trees, the Lake calm, still as it can be making a priceless picturesque view. When you look up at the top of the tree line and then to the water the reflection perfect.  Ring rippling and expanding on the water where fish have jumped or surfaced for the dinner hatching all around them.  The geese honking letting the world know they are coming in for a landing. A great sleep under the stars, the clear night shining bright. What a wonderful weekend.
