Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men. So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God. (1 Corinthians 7:17-24 ESV)
Take a closer look; a common message appears throughout the passage.
Vs. 17 “Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him.”
Vs. 20 “Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him.”
Vs. 24 “Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to.”
At this point of time in Corinth, new Christians were feeling pressure to leave their social and cultural identity and conform to what they thought a Christian should be. They believed their new found hope and faith in Jesus was not enough. In essence, they needed to become someone they were not.
These passages are just as relevant today. God can use you where you are right now and as you are. Not only can God use you, but he WANTS to use you. When we become Christians, God does not want us to fill the “one size fits all” Christian mold. God wants to do His redeeming work in us and through us in the unique situations in which we are called.
Pray daily that God will use you in the situations he has placed you in and that Jesus will always be enough.
