  • Jesus: The Light of the City

The city had no need of the sun
or of the moon to shine in it,
for the glory of God illuminated it.
    The Lamb is its light

    Revelation 21:23

When we get to Heaven, we won’t need the sun that shines in our solar system. Jesus will be the Light of the City. Jesus will be everything that we look for in light. Jesus will be abundantly present—everywhere, all the time—so we don’t need to worry about stumbling in the dark or bumping into things or getting lost. Jesus will show us everything we need to know, so we don’t need to look for a reading light or for a lighted room in order to learn. Heaven will be a perfect place, so we won’t need a fire to keep us warm. And there’ll be no dangers in Heaven, so we won’t need protection in the dark from predators. Heaven will not need the sun, because the glory of God will shine in it and Jesus will be its Light.

Lord, I know what Your light does for me now, so I look forward to Your light in Heaven.

Light, in contrast to darkness, is a trademark of civilizations. Walk in the light on Earth for a better life, because you can do more in the light; it’s safer and it’s more comfortable. But primarily walk in the light because you’ll be closer to Jesus, who is the Light.

Lord, remind me that when my path gets dark, it’s because I’m not close to You. Help me see the Light, walk closer to the Light and learn from the Light. Amen.
