  • Jesus: Our Passover

Therefore purge out the old leaven,
that you may be a new lump,
    since you truly are unleavened.
    For indeed Christ, our Passover
    was sacrificed for us.

    1 Corinthians 5:7

Jesus is our Passover. Once each year, Jewish families celebrated their deliverance from Egypt by eating a special Passover meal and by sacrificing a lamb to make atonement for the sins of the family. The father would place his hands on the head of the lamb to confess the sins of the family members. That was symbolic of transferring the family sins to the lamb; then the blood of the lamb was shed, a prototype of Jesus’ becoming the Lamb of God to take away our sin. Jesus became the fulfillment of the Passover. The lamb had to be perfect, without blemish, which is a picture of the perfect life of Jesus. Because Jesus did not sin, He was qualified to take away the sin of the world. (John 1:291 Peter 2:22).

Jesus, You are my Passover Lamb; You became sin for me (2 Corinthians 5:21), and Your blood is the basis for my forgiveness. Jesus, I praise You for Your sacrificial death. Thank You for dying for me and for the world.

Jesus is your Passover. Just as each Jewish family looked back in gratitude for deliverance from the death angel that passed over their home, you should look back in gratitude that judgment has passed over you. Then you should look forward to the return of Jesus to take you home to live with Him. His future coming is just as sure as His past sacrificial death. You can have faith in both of them.

Lord, I look back and remember Your death, and I look forward, waiting for Your return. Amen.

The benefits of Passover are ours because of Jesus.
