Coffee Time with Jesus

  • Jesus: The Hidden Manna
He who has an ear, let him hear
what the Spirit says to the churches.
    To him who overcomes
I will give some of the hidden manna to eat.
And I will give him a white stone,
and on the stone a new name written
    which no one knows except
    him who receives it.
    Revelation 2:17

The rabbis taught that when the Messiah came, He would find the hidden Ark of the Covenant and feed the people the manna that was kept in the Ark. Since God supplied manna for Israel to eat in the wilderness, the people expected their Messiah to feed them in the same way. But Jesus corrected their false expectations with these words: “The bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). Then, to make sure all understood, He said, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). Jesus was not going to give them physical bread to keep their bodies alive; He was going to give them spiritual bread. “If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (John 6:51).

Lord Jesus, I have believed in You. I have eaten Your bread, and You are good.

When Jesus spoke of giving hidden manna, He was not talking about some stale bread left over from the wilderness wanderings. Nor was He talking about yesterday’s day-old bread. The Jewish people were looking for a pot of old manna. It was as if they were looking for a huge pile of bread to last them the rest of their lives. Who wants a warehouse full of old bread when you have Jesus, the Hidden Manna? He says, “Whoever eats [of Me], . . . I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:54).

Jesus, I come daily to eat at Your table. Your bread is fresh and good. I feel strong when I eat of You. Amen.
