#St. John Chrysostom Saint of the Day Saint of the Day St. John Chrysostom St. John Chrysostom (347-407 A.D.) was born to noble parents in Antioch

#an important center of Christianity in his day. After the death of his father

#his mother sent him to the best schools for his education. As a result of his philosophical studies he was convinced of the truth of Christianity

#entered the Church

#and became a renowned scholar and orator. He then adopted a life of extreme asceticism as a hermit and committed the whole of Sacred Scripture to memory. The brilliance of his mind combined with the holiness of his soul made him famous; he was ordained a

#among the greatest in the history of the Church

#which earned him the name 'Chrysostom' meaning

#'Golden-mouthed' or 'Golden tongued'. His sermons

#which extended for up to two hours

#were public marvels. His straightforward style of preaching the Scriptures and his practical homilies made him very popular. He also denounced the abuses of the ruling authority and preached against the immorality of the day

#which resulted in him being exiled numerous times. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 451. St. John Chrysostom's feast day is September 13th.

#"Jacob! Jacob!" He answered

#"Here I am." Then he said: "I am God

#the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt

#for there I will make you a great nation. Not only will I go down to Egypt with you; I will also bring you back here

Today’s Feast Day

Christmas

December 25th is the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the greatest Christian holy day after Easter. “Christ Mass” is the Eucharistic feast celebrating the birth of Christ, the Incarnation of Second Person of the Holy Trinity in the womb of the Virgin Mary, who came to suffer and die on a cross to save us from our sins. Three Masses are celebrated at Christmas: Midnight Mass, or "The Angel's Mass"; Mass at Dawn, or "The Shepherd's Mass; and Mass during the Day, or "The King's Mass." The octave of Christmas lasts from December 25th until January 1st, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. In the current Roman Catholic calendar the Christmas season continues until the feast of Jesus' baptism on the Sunday following Epiphany; on the ancient liturgical calendar Christmastide continues until Candlemas, or the Presentation of Jesus on February 2nd. Christmas is a Holy Day of Obligation.
