on Thursday of week 4 in Ordinary Time

    Office of Readings

    Introduction (without Invitatory)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, use the version with the Invitatory Psalm instead.

O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen. Alleluia.

    Hymn

The martyrs living now with Christ
    In suffering were tried,
    Their anguish overcome by love
When on his cross they died.

    Across the centuries they come,
    In constancy unmoved,
Their loving hearts make no complaint,
    In silence they are proved.

No man has ever measured love,
Or weighed it in his hand,
But God who knows the inmost heart
    Gives them the promised land.

Praise Father, Son and Spirit blest,
Who guides us through the night
In ways that reach beyond the stars
    To everlasting light.

    Francis E. Mostyn (1860-1939)

    ________

    Psalm 43 (44)
    In time of defeat

“In all these trials, we triumph through the power of him who has shown his love for us” (Rom 8:37).

Their own arm did not bring them victory: this was won by your right hand and the light of your face.

We heard with our own ears, O God,
our fathers have told us the story
of the things you did in their days,
you yourself, in days long ago.

    To plant them you uprooted the nations;
to let them spread you laid peoples low.
    No sword of their own won the land;
no arm of their own brought them victory.
It was your right hand, your arm
and the light of your face; for you loved them.

It is you, my king, my God,
        who granted victories to Jacob.
    Through you we beat down our foes;
in your name we trampled down our aggressors.

For it was not in my bow that I trusted
nor yet was I saved by my sword:
it was you who saved us from our foes,
it was you who put our foes to shame.
All day long our boast was in God
and we praised your name without ceasing.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

Their own arm did not bring them victory: this was won by your right hand and the light of your face.

    Psalm 43 (44)

If you return to the Lord, then he will not hide his face from you.

    Yet now you have rejected us, disgraced us;
you no longer go forth with our armies.
You make us retreat from the foe
and our enemies plunder us at will.

You make us like sheep for the slaughter
and scatter us among the nations.
You sell your own people for nothing
and make no profit by the sale.

You make us the taunt of our neighbours,
the laughing-stock of all who are near.
Among the nations, you make us a byword,
among the peoples a thing of derision.

    All day long my disgrace is before me;
my face is covered with shame
at the voice of the taunter, the scoffer,
at the sight of the foe and avenger.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

If you return to the Lord, then he will not hide his face from you.

    ________

    Psalm 43 (44)

Arise, Lord, do not reject us for ever.

This befell us though we had not forgotten you,
though we had not been false to your covenant,
    though we had not withdrawn our hearts;
though our feet had not strayed from your path.
Yet you have crushed us in a place of sorrows
and covered us with the shadow of death.

Had we forgotten the name of our God
or stretched out hands to another god,
would not God have found this out,
he who knows the secrets of the heart?
It is for you that we face death all day long
and are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

Awake, O Lord, why do you sleep?
Arise, do not reject us for ever!
Why do you hide your face
and forget our oppression and misery?

    For we are brought down low to the dust;
our body lies prostrate on the earth.
Stand up and come to our help!
Redeem us because of your love!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
        and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end.
    Amen.

Arise, Lord, do not reject us for ever.

    Psalm-prayer

Lord, rise up and come to our aid; with your strong arm lead us to freedom, as you mightily delivered our forefathers. Since you are the king who knows the secrets of our hearts, fill them with the light of truth.

    Or:

Lord Jesus, you foretold that we would share in the persecutions that brought you to a violent death. The Church formed at the cost of your precious blood is even now conformed to your Passion; may it be transformed, now and eternally, by the power of your resurrection.

    ________

℣. Let your face shine on your servant, Lord.
    ℟. Teach me your decrees.

    ________

    First Reading
    2 Thessalonians 1:1-12
    Greetings and thanksgiving

From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonika which is in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ; wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We feel we must be continually thanking God for you, brothers; quite rightly, because your faith is growing so wonderfully and the love that you have for one another never stops increasing; and among the churches of God we can take special pride in you for your constancy and faith under all the persecutions and troubles you have to bear. It all shows that God’s judgement is just, and the purpose of it is that you may be found worthy of the kingdom of God; it is for the sake of this that you are suffering now.
God will very rightly repay with injury those who are injuring you, and reward you, who are suffering now, with the same peace as he will give us, when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven with the angels of his power. He will come in flaming fire to impose the penalty on all who do not acknowledge God and refuse to accept the Good News of our Lord Jesus. It will be their punishment to be lost eternally, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength on that day when he comes to be glorified among his saints and seen in his glory by all who believe in him; and you are believers, through our witness.
Knowing this, we pray continually that our God will make you worthy of his call, and by his power fulfil all your desires for goodness and complete all that you have been doing through faith; because in this way the name of our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you and you in him, by the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Responsory
    2 Th 1:10; Ps 145:13

℟. The Lord will come to be glorified among his own,* and to be adored among all believers.
℣. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds,* and to be adored among all believers.

    Second Reading
From an account of the martyrdom of Saint Paul Miki and his companions, by a contemporary writer
    You shall be my witnesses

The crosses were set in place. Father Pasio and Father Rodriguez took turns encouraging the victims. Their steadfast behaviour was wonderful to see. The Father Bursar stood motionless, his eyes turned heavenward. Brother Martin gave thanks to God’s goodness by singing psalms. Again and again he repeated: “Into your hands, Lord, I entrust my life.” Brother Francis Branco also thanked God in a loud voice. Brother Gonsalvo in a very loud voice kept saying the Our Father and Hail Mary.
Our brother, Paul Miki, saw himself standing now in the noblest pulpit he had ever filled. To his “congregation” he began by proclaiming himself a Japanese and a Jesuit. He was dying for the Gospel he preached. He gave thanks to God for this wonderful blessing and he ended his “sermon” with these words: “As I come to this supreme moment of my life, I am sure none of you would suppose I want to deceive you. And so I tell you plainly: there is no way to be saved except the Christian way. My religion teaches me to pardon my enemies and all who have offended me. I do gladly pardon the Emperor and all who have sought my death. I beg them to seek baptism and be Christians themselves.”
Then he looked at his comrades and began to encourage them in their final struggle. Joy glowed in all their faces, and in Louis’ most of all. When a Christian in the crowd cried out to him that he would soon be in heaven, his hands, his whole body strained upward with such joy that every eye was fixed on him.
Anthony, hanging at Louis’ side, looked towards heaven and called upon the holy names – “Jesus, Mary!” He began to sing a psalm: “Praise the Lord, you children!” (He learned it in catechism class in Nagasaki. They take care there to teach the children some psalms to help them learn their catechism).
Others kept repeating “Jesus, Mary!” Their faces were serene. Some of them even took to urging the people standing by to live worthy Christian lives. In these and other ways they showed their readiness to die.
Then, according to Japanese custom, the four executioners began to unsheathe their spears. At this dreadful sight, all the Christians cried out, “Jesus, Mary!” And the storm of anguished weeping then rose to batter the very skies. The executioners killed them one by one. One thrust of the spear, then a second blow. It was over in a very short time.

    Responsory

℟. We ought to boast about the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom we have our salvation, life and resurrection,* through whom we have been redeemed and saved.
℣. It has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,* through whom we have been redeemed and saved.

    ________

    Let us pray.

Lord God, source of strength to all the saints,
you called your martyrs Paul and his companions to undergo the cross that they might enter into life.
Let their prayer help us to keep the faith to the end of our days.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
    Amen.

    ________

    Let us praise the Lord.
    – Thanks be to God.
