    Our Lady of Guadalupe - Feast

    Office of Readings

    Introduction (without Invitatory)

    If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, use the version with the Invitatory Psalm instead.

    O God, come to our aid.
    O Lord, make haste to help us.
    Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
    as it was in the beginning,
    is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen. Alleluia.

    Hymn

    Hail, of paradise the portal!
    Tree of Life regained, immortal;
    Whence, through thee, all sweetness floweth,
    And salvation’s fruit still groweth.
    Thou our hearts aright inclinest,
    On our life’s way brightly shinest;
    Us from God’s just anger savest,
    Who to man our Saviour gavest.

    Hail! Blest shrine of God the Father,
    Thither sinners haste to gather;
    Pardon for their guilt obtaining,
    Freedom from the foe’s enchaining;
    Strength from thee the weak shall borrow,
    Comfort, thou, of all who sorrow;
    From the final wrath tremendous,
    Mother of our Christ, defend us.

    Star of ocean! Mother fairest!
    Who the name of Mary bearest;
    In thy bright illumination
    Pales each star and constellation.
    Hail, O Father! Hail, sweet Mother!
    Hail, O Son of God, our Brother!
    Let the hosts of heaven adore thee,
    Every spirit bow before thee.

    ________

    Psalm 23 (24)
    The Lord comes to his temple

    “The gates of heaven were opened to Christ because he was lifted up in the flesh” (St Irenaeus).

    The Virgin Mary received blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saved her.

    The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness,
    the world and all its peoples.
    It is he who set it on the seas;
    on the waters he made it firm.

    Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?
    Who shall stand in his holy place?
    The man with clean hands and pure heart,
    who desires not worthless things,
    who has not sworn so as to deceive his neighbour.

    He shall receive blessings from the Lord
    and reward from the God who saves him.
    Such are the men who seek him,
    seek the face of the God of Jacob.

    O gates, lift high your heads;
    grow higher, ancient doors.
    Let him enter, the king of glory!

    Who is the king of glory?
    The Lord, the mighty, the valiant,
    the Lord, the valiant in war.

    O gates, lift high your heads;
    grow higher, ancient doors.
    Let him enter, the king of glory!

    Who is he, the king of glory?
    He, the Lord of armies,
    he is the king of glory.

    Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
    as it was in the beginning,
    is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

    The Virgin Mary received blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saved her.

    Psalm-prayer

    King of glory, Lord of power and might, cleanse our hearts from all sin, preserve the innocence of our hands, and keep our minds from vanity, so that we may deserve your blessing in your holy place.

    Or:

    Lord God, ruler and guide of heaven and earth, you gave Christ a share in our human race, made him a priest, and brought him into the temple of your glory. Make our intentions pure and selfless and give virtue to our thoughts, that the King of glory may enter our hearts and bring us rejoicing to your holy mountain.

    ________

    Psalm 45 (46)
    God, our refuge and our strength

    “They will call his name ‘Immanuel’, which means ‘God with us’” (Mt 1:23).

    The Most High has made holy the place where he dwells.

    God is for us a refuge and strength,
    a helper close at hand, in time of distress,
    so we shall not fear though the earth should rock,
    though the mountains fall into the depths of the sea;
    even though its waters rage and foam,
    even though the mountains be shaken by its waves.

    The Lord of hosts is with us:
    the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

    The waters of a river give joy to God’s city,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
    God is within, it cannot be shaken;
    God will help it at the dawning of the day.
    Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken:
    he lifts his voice, the earth shrinks away.

    The Lord of hosts is with us:
    the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

    Come, consider the works of the Lord,
    the redoubtable deeds he has done on the earth.
    He puts an end to wars over all the earth;
    the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps.
    He burns the shields with fire.
    ‘Be still and know that I am God,
    supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth!’

    The Lord of hosts is with us:
    the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

    Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
    as it was in the beginning,
    is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

    The Most High has made holy the place where he dwells.

    Psalm-prayer

    All-powerful Father, the refuge and strength of your people, you protect in adversity and defend in prosperity those who put their trust in you. May they persevere in seeking your will and find their way to you through obedience.

    Or:

    Lord God, when the restless powers of this world and the waters of hell rise up against your holy city, the new Jerusalem, you keep watch over it and it is safe, founded on solid rock. May the river that flows from the throne of the Lamb so purify this city as to make it shine out before men as your chosen dwelling, the unfailing sign of your greatness.

    ________

    Psalm 86 (87)
    Jerusalem, mother of all nations

    “The Jerusalem which is above is free and is our mother” (Gal 4:26).

    Of you are told glorious things, O Virgin Mary!

    On the holy mountain is his city
    cherished by the Lord.
    The Lord prefers the gates of Sion
    to all Jacob’s dwellings.
    Of you are told glorious things,
    O city of God!

    ‘Babylon and Egypt I will count
    among those who know me;
    Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia,
    these will be her children
    and Sion shall be called “Mother”
    for all shall be her children.’

    It is he, the Lord Most High,
    who gives each his place.
    In his register of peoples he writes:
    ‘These are her children,’
    and while they dance they will sing:
    ‘In you all find their home.’

    Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit,
    as it was in the beginning,
    is now, and ever shall be,
    world without end.
    Amen.

    Of you are told glorious things, O Virgin Mary!

    Psalm-prayer

    Lord God, your only Son wept over ancient Jerusalem, soon to be destroyed for its lack of faith. He established the new Jerusalem firmly upon rock and made it the mother of the faithful. Make us rejoice in your Church and grant that all people may be reborn into the freedom of your Spirit.

    ℣. Blessed are those who hear the word of God.
    ℟. And keep it in their hearts.

    ________

    The one-year and two-year cycles of readings are identical today.

    First Reading
    1 Chronicles 17:1-15
    The oracle of the prophet Nathan

    Once David had settled into his house, he said to the prophet Nathan, ‘Here am I living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the Lord’s covenant is still beneath the awning of a tent.’ Nathan said to David, ‘Do all that is in your mind, for God is with you.’
    But that very night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, ‘Go and tell my servant David, “The Lord says this: You are not the man to build me a house to dwell in. I have never stayed in a house from the day I brought Israel out until today, but went from tent to tent, from one shelter to another. In all my journeying with the whole of Israel, did I say to any one of the judges of Israel, whom I had appointed as shepherds of my people: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”
    ‘This is what you must say to my servant David: “The Lord of Hosts says this: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel. I have been with you on all your expeditions; I have cut off all your enemies before you. I will give you fame as great as the fame of the greatest on earth. I will provide a place for my people Israel; I will plant them there and they shall live in that place and never be disturbed again; nor shall the wicked continue to destroy them, as they did in the days when I appointed judges over my people Israel; I will subdue all their enemies. I will make you great; the Lord will make you a House. And when your days are ended and you must go to your ancestors, I will preserve your offspring after you, a son of your own, and make his sovereignty secure. It is he who shall build a house for me and I will make his throne firm for ever. I will be a father to him and he a son to me. I will not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrew it from your predecessor. I will preserve him for ever in my house and in my kingdom; and his throne shall be established for ever.”’
    Nathan related all these words to David and this whole revelation.

    Responsory
    1 Ch 17:7-8,11-12; Ps 89:5

    ℟. The angel Gabriel was sent to announce the word to Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, and she began to fear the light. ‘Mary, do not be afraid, you have won the Lord’s favour:* You are to conceive and bear a son; he shall be called Son of the Most High.’
    ℣. ‘Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.* You are to conceive and bear a son; he shall be called Son of the Most High.’

    Second Reading
    The traditional narrative called "Nican Mopohua"
    (16th century)
    Truly I, your Mother, am here

    Very early one Saturday morning at the beginning of December of 1531, a poor but respected Indian called Juan Diego (born, it is said, in Cuauhtitlan and under the pastoral care of the religious community of Tlatelolco) was on his way to Tlaltelolco on a holy errand. When he reached the hill called Tepeyac dawn was breaking and he heard singing coming from above the hill. The singing stopped and was not heard again, but he heard a voice calling to him from the top of the hill. “Beloved Juan Diego,” it said. He responded at once, bravely climbing the hill towards the place where the voice was coming from.
    When he reached the top he saw a Lady standing there, who called him to herself. When he came close to her he was stunned with how beautiful she was: her clothes shone like the sun. Then the Virgin gave him her command: “Know, beloved son, that I am the immaculate ever-virgin Mary, Mother of the true God who is the Origin of all life, who creates all things and keeps them in being, the Lord of Heaven and Earth. I greatly wish, I earnestly desire, that my house should be built in this very place. I will show him to you there and praise him as I show him, my Love and Compassion, my Help and Defence. For in truth I am your compassionate Mother, yours and of all who live together in this land and of any others who love me, seek me, and call on me with confidence and devotion. In that house I will listen to their weeping and their sadness, I will give them help in their troubles and a cure for their misfortunes. So that this desire of mine may be fulfilled, go to Mexico City, to the palace of the Bishop. Tell him that I have sent you to him to tell him how much I want a house to be built here for me, a church built here at the bottom of the hill.”
    When Juan Diego arrived in the city he went immediately to the house of the Bishop, Juan Zumárraga, a Franciscan. But when the bishop heard what he had to say, he did not believe him completely and said “My son, come another time and I will listen to you then. Meanwhile I will consider what should be done about your wish and your desire.”
    Another day he saw the Queen of Heaven coming down from where he had seen her. She came to meet him next to the hill, stopped him, and said “Listen, my beloved son, have no fear or anxiety in your heart. Do not try to do anything about your uncle’s grave illness or about any other trouble of yours. For am I not here with you, your mother? Are you not safe in the shadow of my protection? Am I not the source of your life and your happiness? Am I not holding you in my lap, wrapped in my arms? What else can you possibly need? Do not be upset or distressed. Climb again, my beloved son, to the summit of this hill, to the place where you saw me and heard me speak. You will find flowers growing there. Pick them and gather them and bring them down to me.”
    Juan Diego came back down with the flowers he had picked. She looked at them, took them with her blessed hands and put them in his tilma, or cape. She told him: “Most beloved son, these flowers are the sign that you are to carry to the Bishop. You yourself are my messenger and I entrust myself to your faithfulness. I strictly command you not to unfold your tilma in front of anyone except the Bishop; but to him you should show what it is you are carrying. As you do so, tell him the story of how I asked you to climb to the top of the hill and pick the flowers there. Tell him everything you saw and marvelled at, so that he will believe you and undertake to build the church I wish for.”
    Obedient to the command of the Queen of Heaven, he took the road to Mexico City. He went happily, confident that all would turn out well. Coming into the palace he prostrated himself before the Bishop and recounted all that he had seen and told him the errand on which he had been sent. “My Lord,” he said, “I have done as you asked. I went to my Lady, the Queen of Heaven, holy Mary, the Mother of God, and told her that you had asked for a sign so that you might believe me and build the church that the Virgin herself desires. I told her that I had given my word to bring you back some sign of her wishes. She heard what you had asked and accepted with good grace your request for some sign so that you could fulfil her will. Today, very early, she sent me back to see you.”
    The whole city came running to see the holy image. They wondered at it, accepted it as the work of God and made prayers to him. And that day Juan Diego’s uncle, whom the Virgin had cured, told them in what way she should be revered and said that her image should be known as the ever-virgin Saint Mary of Guadalupe.

    Responsory

    ℟. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it:* You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
    ℣. Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me.* You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

    ________

    Canticle
    Te Deum

    We praise you, O God:
    we acclaim you as the Lord.

    Everlasting Father,
    all the world bows down before you.

    All the angels sing your praise,
    the hosts of heaven and all the angelic powers,

    all the cherubim and seraphim
    call out to you in unending song:

    Holy, Holy, Holy,
    is the Lord God of angel hosts!

    The heavens and the earth are filled
    with your majesty and glory.

    The glorious band of apostles,
    the noble company of prophets,

    the white-robed army who shed their blood for Christ,
    all sing your praise.

    And to the ends of the earth
    your holy Church proclaims her faith in you:

    Father, whose majesty is boundless,
    your true and only Son, who is to be adored,
    the Holy Spirit sent to be our Advocate.

    You, Christ, are the king of glory,
    Son of the eternal Father.

    When you took our nature to save mankind
    you did not shrink from birth in the Virgin’s womb.

    You overcame the power of death
    opening the Father’s kingdom to all who believe in you.

    Enthroned at God’s right hand in the glory of the Father,
    you will come in judgement according to your promise.

    You redeemed your people by your precious blood.
    Come, we implore you, to our aid.

    Grant us with the saints
    a place in eternal glory.

    The final part of the hymn may be omitted:

    Lord, save your people
    and bless your inheritance.

    Rule them and uphold them
    for ever and ever.

    Day by day we praise you:
    we acclaim you now and to all eternity.

    In your goodness, Lord, keep us free from sin.
    Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

    May your mercy always be with us, Lord,
    for we have hoped in you.

    In you, Lord, we put our trust:
    we shall not be put to shame.

    ________

    Let us pray.

    God of power and mercy,
    you blessed the Americas at Tepeyac
    with the presence of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe.
    May her prayers help all men and women
    to accept each other as brothers and sisters.
    Through your justice present in our hearts,
    may your peace reign in our world.
    Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
    who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    one God, for ever and ever.
    Amen.

    ________

    Let us praise the Lord.
    – Thanks be to God.

    ________

    The week’s sequence of readings from Scripture has been interrupted today, because today’s feast has a First Reading of its own.
    The reading you would otherwise have seen is shown below. It is perfectly reasonable (and encouraged) to join it on to yesterday’s or tomorrow’s First Reading, if it goes well with one of them and you think this is a sensible way of avoiding a gap.

    Isaiah 29:1-8
    God’s judgement on Jerusalem

    Woe, Ariel, Ariel,
    city where David encamped.
    Let a year or two pass,
    let the feasts make their full round
    then I will lay siege to Ariel,
    and there will be moaning and bemoaning.

    You will be an Ariel for me,
    like David I will encamp against you,
    I will blockade you with palisades,
    and mount siege-works against you.

    Thrown down – you will speak from the ground,
    your words will come muffled by dust.
    Your voice will rise from the earth like a ghost’s,
    you will speak from the dust in a whisper.

    Suddenly, unexpectedly,
    you will be visited by the Lord of Hosts
    with thunder, earthquake, mighty din,
    hurricane, tempest, flame of devouring fire.

    The horde of your enemies shall be scattered like fine dust,
    the tyrant horde like flying chaff;
    the horde of all the nations at war with Ariel
    shall vanish like a dream, like a vision at night.

    And all those fighting against her,
    the entrenchments besieging her,
    shall be like the hungry man who dreams he eats,
    and wakes with an empty belly,

    like the thirsty man who dreams he drinks
    and wakes exhausted, his throat parched;
    so shall it be with the horde of all the nations
    making war on Mount Zion.
