A Note on Bali

  • An article on Bali has been on our newsfeed, and it seems to miss a most important detail. The article is mainly about a new law criminalizing extramarital sex. The article and comments both seem to believe that the Balinese are Muslim. In fact, Bali is part of Indonesia, and Indonesia as a whole is Muslim-majority (of Muslim-majority countries, it has the highest population in fact); but Bali is a remaining stronghold of the Hinduism that used to be the majority religion before proselytization by Islam, so Bali itself is a Hindu region. Its form of Hinduism is conjoined with the indigenous local beliefs, so it's not quite the same as any of the Indian varieties, but it is umistakably Hindu.

It is quite possible that Hindu leaders would also support this new law, though the article says that it is due to Muslim influence. If it is a nationwide law, that may well be the case; but then it would be better if the article and headline called it an Indonesian law, rather than Balinese. If, on the other hand, it is only a Balinese matter, then it is unlikely that it has much to do with Muslim wishes.

If I can find any clarifying information, I will share it. For now, I am left with these possible inconsistencies and questions as to what is actually going on and why.

Gail Dobson Good points Mark! But does the version, sect, brand of religion matter? Religion in law is a bad combo, period.

John Anderson, CD, CIF Mons ON I feel, from the article, that it likely is a nationwide law, as the Islamic point of view on extramarital sex is well known. The Hindu point of view is more relaxed, although still officially against it. Unlike the US, where each state has a criminal cod...  more
