Christmas Spirit

  • My wife and I decided to do a little shopping today in town.  There were quite a few people doing their Christmas shopping.  What a madhouse.  People and cars hurriedly moving along searching for that last bargain.  Pushing, shoving, trading insults with other drivers.  Now, that seems to be the normal thing in town this time of year.

But there is another population in our community.  People who are elderly or disabled or both.  I am both, disabled (legally blind) and elderly (74).  I have a couple of comments.

Please have a thought for the disabled.  We move more slowly and have to use special tools to get around.  Likewise older people may not respond as quickly as would a younger person.  So, if you see someone like that, slow down.  Hold a door open.  Say hello, we don't bite.  Above all, have patience and understanding.  I work with an organization called "A Touch of Understanding".  We are invited into schools to talk to the kids, tell our stories and explain some of the difficulties we have.  Over the past few years we have touched the souls of over 190,000 children.  Hopefully they pass the information on to their parents.  It is all about what the name says.  Kindness and understanding.

That is what this time of year is all about.  Fellowship, good cheer, charity and understanding.  Please pass this message on to your friends, family and congregations.

And have a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.  Many blessings and love from my family to yours
