Understanding the Unbeliever

  • Have you ever been confronted for your faith? Harsh persecution for Christians isn’t something most of us have been subjected to here in the United States. Yes, at times we may have felt rejected, or treated unfairly, but for the most part, we haven’t been challenged with physical suffering, imprisonment, or even death. However, in other places around the world, believers are severely oppressed for their faith and praying for them and recognizing their courage should bolster our resolve to be dedicated to God.

Whatever negative treatment we may encounter, the Bible consistently recommends a response of patient, understanding, love and compassion for those who do not share our views. The Bible tells us that Jesus said anyone mistreated for His sake is actually blessed (Luke 6:22-23), and Peter points out that from God’s point of view, such oppression is designed to prove our faith genuine (1 Peter 1:6-7). This is why we must never take our faith, nor personal relationship to our Lord, for granted.

When an unbeliever challenges or persecutes us, be understanding. Listen more than you speak. Be respectful, kind, and compassionate because Christ will shine through in your character. Praying for the unbeliever can be a positive and meaningful experience for both of you. Share your personal story and testimony. Remember, no one knows what leads someone to their decisions. Life’s experiences can direct people down difficult paths. As Christians and followers of Christ, you are an ambassador of the Gospel. You never know what one word, or act of kindness, can touch someone’s heart and ignite their relationship with Almighty God.

So have courage and be steadfast in your faith. Be an example to others who may not know God’s Word. Though oppression is certainly nothing you or I would want, we can take heart knowing that even in such extreme situations, there are blessings that lead to rejoicing in Lord.
